Natural skin care could have inner health benefits

While the importance of maintaining a natural skin care routine to keep the face and body looking healthy may seem obvious, the effect it could have on a person's insides may be less apparent.

However, scientists at Aston University are uncovering ways in which common bugs found on the skin - such as Propionibacterium acnes - can have a negative effect on a person's interior health.

The acne-causing bacteria strain is often simply dismissed as unimportant if it is detected in blood tests, says infection specialist Professor Peter Lambert.

But it may actually be linked with illnesses ranging from chest and eye infections to damage of the heart valves and infections of artificial joints.

A natural skin care routine to help eliminate the bacteria on the outside could therefore have a positive impact on the individual's health on the inside as well.

Professor Lambert specialises in infectious diseases, their treatment and diagnosis, and in the actions of antibiotics in combating illness.
