Healthy diet trends for 2012

The start of a New Year is a great time to start developing healthier eating habits. So what are the top diet trends to watch for in 2012?
Read on for the results of a recent survey of more than 200 registered dieticians and their predictions for this year’s hottest trends in healthy eating.
Fresh organic food
Fresh, minimally processed foods are predicted to be the biggest nutrition trend in 2012. Whole, organic foods are expected to increase in demand as more people become cautious of additives and aware of how their food is grown.
Ethnic foods
The trend toward spicing things up with ethnic foods is predicted to increase in 2012. This is a good thing, since reports in Canada suggest that the nation’s growing Asian populations are having a powerful influence towards healthier dietary trends.
So go ahead and add a bit of healthy variety into your diet this year. Try experimenting with exotic flavours and spices and dabble in ethnic cuisines, or search for an ethnic restaurant in Vancouver near you.
Vitamins, minerals and fibre, oh my!
There seems to be a growing emphasis on getting more antioxidants and phytonutrients into our diet. While most North Americans are already getting enough protein, carbohydrates and fats, people are generally not getting enough fibre in their diets.
Expect to see an increased emphasis on eating whole grains, fruits and vegetables in 2012.
Local, seasonal foods
Eating seasonal and locally grown fruits and vegetables will be a big trend in 2012. This year, make plans to shop at your local farmer’s market for a selection of fresh, seasonal foods and reap the benefits of shopping locally.
If you live in Vancouver, start the year off right by stocking up on fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables at the Winter Farmers Market, open now through to April 28, 2012.
Reduce harmful nutrients
This year we’ll see even more of an emphasis on reducing our consumption of harmful nutrients. Trans fats top the list, followed by added sugars, saturated fat and sodium.
Portion control
It’s all about balanced eating this year, with more people turning to tools such as My Food Guide (or MyPlate in the U.S.) to help balance their eating and control their portions.
So how do you plan to eat healthier in 2012? Please share in the comments below and cheers to a healthier New Year!
